Roquetas de Mar / Andalusia

The beach of Roquetas de Mar was not as fine sandy as our guide told us. There were much more stony parts than sandy ones, but in the second week Ralf found a sandbank about 15 meters off the shore that was high enough to stand there, at a height of 1,75 m or more. Roquetas is divided up very strange. There's a centre where (in June) nothing happens; then you may follow the beach promenade for more than 1 mile (nearly) without seeing any restaurant or shop to reach the hotelzone of Roquetas with the main street and a number of shops, restaurants and bars.

Unfortunately there have only been young families and pensioners. So the nightlife was embossed by pensioners from 10.30 p.m. til the end. There are only on handful of bars and pubs for young people, which have been rarely filled on Saturday and might be full in summer. Another problem was to find something to eat in the afternoon. No fast-food or something like that could be bought between 3 p.m. (restaurants stopped cooking) and 5 p.m. then opened the shops and we could buy some cakes. The next Mc Donald's is 25 min. away (by car) in Almería and also a Carrefour (former PRYCA).

Comment 1: Beautiful hotels, boring (empty) and not attractive beach, no nightlife; only a place for young families and pensioners to relax. Nothing for young people who like to have partytime.

Surroundings and the Costa de Almería

The surroundings in about 70 miles are not very exciting. Having seen a part of Andalucia (Costa del Sol 1994) this region was disappointing. some scattered white villages, some beautiful lonesome beaches near San José, some desolate desert, a not so impressing coast (Gran Canaria was better) at the Cabo de Gata and the certainty of the Sierra Nevada or Nerja having been more interesting, that might be my second comment. However we didn't see the Alcazaba of Almería; this might have been a mistake.

Here are some of my few photos I made on our three trips, with a short comment.

San José   Playa de Mónsul with a view to the Cabo de Gata

View to the bay and the beach of San José, behind the Cabo de Gata .   The Playa de Mónsul (near San José), is a beautiful lonesome beach that could only be reached by driving some miles on a very bad stony road.

Landscape near San José   Left western-town near Tabernas

Typical landscape in the surroundings of
San José and his beaches.
The former wester-town "Texas-Hollywood" lays in Europe's largest desert. Some miles away there is the still opened "Mini-Hollywood".

Ohanes   Ohanes

White village between the Sierra de Gádor and Sierra Nevada...   ... that I found by accident on one of my trips.

Church in Níjar   View in the Sierra de Gádor

Níjar is famous for it's handmade quilt and pottery. It's really Andalusian. Visit it if you're near.   For this view I drove up a long winding road. Beside of Ohanes it was the only interesting thing on my trip through the Sierra de Gádor.
