Because my report of Catalonia has grown up to much, I divided it to: Costa Brava and Barcelona/Costa Dorada. Here I'll tell you something about, Montserrat and the Costa Dorada with it's holiday centre Salou, where I went for holidays for many times.

Salou and surroundings

Salou is the Tourist-centre on the Costa Dorada and is situated 1 hour (by car) in the south of Barcelona and only 15 minutes from the next airport in Reus. The long, large, fine, sandy main beach, Platja Llevant, that's falling very slow to the Sea is the main reason for coming to Salou. My last trip to Salou I enjoyed in the beautiful **** Hotel Salauris Palace close to Port Aventura.

Behind the beach there's a completely modernised promenade, that getting nicer year by year. At it's end in direction to Cambrils there's a daily opened little fair and at the other end is the illuminated fountain "Font Lluminosa", which keeps on changing colors and shapes on and on (when it's getting dark)...

Parallel to beach and promenade is a shopping street where you can see and be seen, with Fast Food Restaurants, cafés and shops ...

Strandpromenade von Salou

... that ends in the part of Salous where Nightlife happens after midnight, with bars, pubs and discos. It's agreeable, that the people who try to take you to "their" disco are not as aggressive as in Lloret de Mar. Salou is dominated by Spanish tourists, followed by English, Russian, Dutch , French and German tourists. The main tourist language is English. Otherwise you'll find there only hotels and apartments, but nearly no old town. In the north of Salou (1-4 miles) you can also spend your holidays at the Cabo de Salou and in Pineda de Salou. There are mainly apartment buildings, a nice beach, a big water-world and some pubs and disco-pubs. The cheapest supermarket in Salou is the "Mercadona" situated in the part near the station.

Cambrils - Tarragona - Port Aventura

Cambrils is the more natural place in the neighbourhood and enclosed to Salou. From centre to centre it's a walk of about 45 min. The best parts of Cambrils are the nice beach and the old town.

I the north of Salou is the big town (100,000 inhabitants) Tarragona situated, that was founded by the Romans and still keeps some buildings out of this time.

Who likes to do some shopping can go to the new shopping centre EROSKI. Who lives in an apartment and wants to buy his own food cheaper than in Salou, may drive to the Carrefour (on the street from Tarragona to Reus). It's a real big store or supermarket with more than 50 tills and where many Spanish people buy all they need. Don't go to the Carrefour in Reus; it's much smaller and not so agreeable.

Pont del Diablo (on the highway near Tarragona)

Finally there's a big attraction called Port Aventura next to Salou. The second biggest pleasure park behind Euro Disney is a great adventure for young and old children. Many rides, shows and other attractions are waiting there for you. The main attraction is the looping ride Dragon Khan s. photo (my friend Ralf took a ride).

From Salou/Cambrils to the South

... are not so many holiday centres to be seen. One day we went to Peñiscola, which has a beautiful sandy beach and seems to be very agreeable. Further a lonely beach near L'Amlettla de Mar and the monastery of Poblet, in the back of Salou.

Sitges

is situated in the north of Tarragona, direction Barcelona and is also worth to be seen. I went there two times and I liked the the old town most. Now knowing that sitges is the No. 1 town in Spain for gays I recognized many more men on the beach than in all other towns and there seemed many of them to be very interested in one another.

Montserrat

The Montserrat is a group of mountains in the southwest of Barcelona. Coming from Barcelona you'll see Montserrat very soon, and be very impressed by these bizzar mountains suddenly growing up in the landscape. Reaching it, or having driven up over there by car or train you'll have another fascinating view of these rocks. For most of the people the main attraction of Montserrat is the old monastery Santa Maria, with the famous Black Madonna, the most holy thing for the Catalans.

Barcelona

What could be said about Barcelona, what's not written in one of these uncountable guides?
I've visited Barcelona for three times and always went to the region near the Plaza de Catalunya and hoped to be lucky in finding a place to park my car. Who likes to test some Spanish Store-shopping may go to the El Corte Inglés. You may also walk down the nearby lane before the Rambla leading to the Gothic quarter, where you can find many shops and boutiques. Finding back you way to the Rambla, you have to take a walk up or down this famous promenade and just take a look at all you may see there. I also can recommend a visit of the Mercat La Boquería that's situated next to the Rambla and is really impressing.

View on Barcelona from the Montjuic

... At the end of the Rambla your getting to the Columbus-stature and to the harbour. There you can go to a new shopping centre and take a look for some shadow or souvenirs. If you've got enough time left, you can drive up the Montjuic and have an impressing view all over Barcelona. What's important not to forget is a visit of the very famous Sagrada Familia.

You may reach her by foot from the Plaza de Catalunya, but because you may have walked a lot on this day, you'll better take a bus or a taxi. One of the things I didn't see yet, is the Park Güell, but I'll visit it the next time I'll come to Barcelona.
