Costa Brava Holidays - Lloret de Mar

During my severals stays in Lloret de Mar (06/89,06/93,06/95), Ampuriabrava (06/99) and L'Estartit (09/99), I had enough time to see some parts of the northern Catalonia and the Costa Brava (wild coast). Let's start with Lloret de Mar. Lloret is a place for young people. Sex and drinking are the most important doings here for some holiday makers, but most of all just wanna have much fun. There are enough discos and many disco-pubs were you really can party. Above all many German and Dutch tourists are staying in Lloret and in the streets and on the beach there's always something going on.

Lloret surely is not one of the most beautiful places on the Costa Brava, but is getting better year by year. The people over there really try to embellish the village. The coarse-grained (but agreeable) beach is relative clean, but in the high seasons much to small. It's possible to change to the beach of Fanals, but both beaches are falling off into the sea very soon. Being always there in June, the discos always have been not very full of people. I preferred the Moef-Ga-GA, a small Disco, that filled up until half past one. The music there was up to date ('93 Dance-floor and '95 House) and there have been lots of beautiful babes.

Short trips

Blanes - Botanical garden

First of all there's Blanes lying only a few miles from Lloret, with it's beautiful botanical garden. The garden is situated very good and there are lots of beautiful flowers to be seen. On another hill there's a ruin of a castle were you have a nice view on Blanes.

Tossa de Mar and the road on the coast

One of the more beautiful places of the Costa Brava is Tossa de Mar. Walking through old lanes in the old town can be as recommended as driving up the coast from Tossa to Sant Feliú de Guixols (beautiful sight).

Sierra de Montseny

Only half an hour in the back of Lloret de Mar begins the Sierra de Montseny (Serra del Montseny). I recommend to drive straight through the region around the 1700 m high Montseny and drive up and up the mountains. Sometimes the street is broken but finally you'll reach the top of the mountain with a radar-station of the Spanish military. There's an interesting landscape to be seen, and may be you'll see some "bulls" blockading the street (photo).

Other destinations between Lloret and the Pyrenées

In the north of Catalonia there are many more interesting places. Here are some places I have seen.

The ruin of the monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes

... impressed me because of it's sight and it's great situation. Inside it's a little bit boring, because it's only a nearly empty building. Only the view down to the sea and the coast is interessting. If you choose a day with far view, you can see the bay of Port de la Selva, the bay of Rosas (only from the top of the mountain) and the nearby Pyrénées. The best view around you'll have from the top of the mountain, where a little bit of the former castle is waiting for you. In about 30 minutes you may reach the top always walking up a very small way.

Cadaqués

Cadaqués, the home of Salvador Dalí the white pearl of the Costa Brava. The most beautiful white village of the Costa Brava owes it's originality above all it's not very attractive stony beach. Thereby the village didn't become one of these ugly places having one hotel next to the other. You can still find nice small lanes, here which really look Spanish.

Being on the way to Cadaqués you may also visit the Cabo de Creus, where you can take a closer look to the wild coast. There's not much more to be seen but if you like you can walk and climb through the rocks.

Dalí-museum

Having a day with bad weather? No problem, visit the Dalí-museum in Figueres(as) (even if the weather is fine). The museum is really great. No boring pictures, but a lot of interesting art and pictures that you can look at and think about what Dalí wanted to say with his art. It's funny for young and even old children :-) .

Trip to Andorra

Going on a trip to Andorra from Lloret de mar, you need a lot of time. One day my friend Ralf and I started to Andorra, taking the N152 to Vic and further to Ripoll. Later we changed to the N260 and finally reached Andorra after more than four hours. This long time we needed because of the long distance and the interesting landscape. We kept on taking photos, videos or just enjoying the green surroundings. Having more than 2,000 m high mountains all around we sometimes forgot only being some hours away from the sea. ...to be continued...

... on our way to Andorra

Plateau (1,000 m), somewhere near Ripoll

Wonderful village some minutes later in the direction of La Seu d'Urgell
in the Sierra de Cadi

... finally reaching Andorra we went to Andorra-town, and walked around. In 1993 you could have bought alcohol, perfume and cigarettes much cheaper than in Spain or France because it was duty-free. Talking about the centre of the town I've to say that it wasn't very beautiful.

Andorra la Vella

I think it will be better taking a look at the villages in the surroundings, somewhere between the 2,500 m mountains. We left Andorra to France and stopped near the border at 2,600 m. We took a look around all these mountains and drove down the Pyrénées in France. Our way home took us some more hours, but finally reaching Lloret, we were glad, having seen so much.   The End!!!

Olot - Banyoles

One day we made a trip lasting not so long to Olot. We drove on to the very impressing Castellfollit de la Roca ...

... the next interesting place we found was Besalú. A really old village, nice to be seen and worth walking around there for some time. Afterwards we visited the "Silver-lake" near Banyoles . The End!!

Ampuriabrava

Ampuriabrava is a new holiday place, that has many beautiful canals all around and a large fine sandy beach. Being on the beach you can see the coast of Rosas only two miles away. Turning around you'll get a shock, because there are three high buildings up to 19 floors behind the beach. They are situated close to the Hotel Xons Playa where you have to book a room with view to the sea. This is the difference between a wonderful and an awful sight. My girlfriend Christine and I spent one week there in June, in the low seasons. So there was not much going on. That was agreeable on the beach, but boring in the nights. The pubs have been open and played good music, but what's an open pub without people, even at midnight? Searching the web, we found out that in the high seasons seem to be more people over there.

L'Estartit

I didn't like so much. It's situated very bad for trips because it took some time to get to other interesting places from there. The village itself is not so bad, because of it's fine sandy beach, it's new harbour and a nice shopping lane with many bars and restaurants in the surroundings. I can not recommend the Hotel Nereida, at the entrance of the village, always being extremely full of noise from the streets and having very bad food!

Bays near Begur

There are some worth to be seen. We only saw two of them ...

Sa Tuna ...

Sa Riera

This have been some impressions from the region between the French border and Barcelona. Also interesting is the coast from the Coast near Perpignan in France visiting Port Vendres and the former border at Portbou. There you can buy vine from there directly on the streets, but it takes a long time reaching Llanca.
